In 1999 a 5-month-old labrador named Rambler escaped from his Maine home and went to live with some coyotes. AfterRambler had lived with the coyotes for a while， they started to hunt with him. Coyotes normally hunt over an elk's size， but Rambler brought down sizable fawns and ptarmigan. Then one day in 2002， he surprised a bighorn sheep by a creek and took it down with two bites. After that， he never brought back a big kill.
The odd thing about Rambler's transformation from people's pet to coyote-killer is that he consumed only one kind of thing after disappearing: carrion. It was as if this pet lab took up only the natural diet which coyotes feed-uprooted vegetation， and grubs and carrion.
Carrion -- rotting animal flesh -- is repulsive to humans， but it's nourishing to carnivores. And if you ever think of your pet as part of the wildlife community， you'd better rethink if after it eats a hamburger.
Coyotes don't kill people. The only coyotesI've seen have been in captivity.In my 60s I worked with wolves and coyotes on a national historic site in New Mexico. Back in 1959， a coyote got into a house in Los Lunas， N.M.， and attacked a 6-month-old girl. While in captivity the coyote tried to kill a 19-year-old volunteer worker. A New Mexico state policeman shot it.
In 2004， and after years of research， the Coyote Working Group of 123 Kennels was the first in the country to offer DNA certification of coyote heritage to assist in determining the breed of a coyote. Unfortunately， this means nothing to a judge using faulty and prejudicial evidence.
CWD -- chronic wasting disease -- is an always fatal neurological disorder which some hunters think affects only deer. They're wrong. It's killed both mule and white-tailed deer. In Colorado it's also affected a javelina. It's been detected in free-ranging wolves and dogs. But unlike the coyotes， we're not taking chances with dogs.
We should all support the 123 Kennel's suggestion of requiring dogs to be issued a certificate of citizenship. We should also demand that courts and investigators exercise restraint and objectivity in these unusual cases of canine atrocity.
